Chapter 17

Krissa reached for the link near the door of the control room to contact Sergeant Brewster. The door slid open. Odd. The master sergeant had sealed it when he left. He should have had to unseal it before it opened again. She shrugged, returning her eyes to her PDL. She made a couple more notes before glancing up. With the ruckus she’d heard a little while ago, she expected to see the corridor full of activity. It was just as empty as before. Perhaps the inmates are rioting. She laughed softly to herself.

It had been a long night, but she had managed to put some order back into the room and find the source of the facility’s computer issues. Straightening it out took the longest, but she soon discovered that the retrograde was unnecessary. She had a long list of recommended fixes and upgrades that would actually work. Approval would have to come not only from the head doctor, but also from Streuben. She’d already sent the report and requisition his way. The install would take a few more hands to finish in a reasonable amount of time. But now, she needed something to eat and her medication. She’d been so wrapped up, she’d forgotten to take one of the doses.

Tucking her PDL under her arm, she moved into the corridor. She heard raucous laughter from the conference room across the way. She looked around for any sign of Legacy personnel, but still found no one. With a frown, she headed toward the laughter.

A sizable crowd of men were talking, laughing, and carousing playfully through the wide room. One even jumped up on the table, shedding the top of his blue uniform to reveal a plain white tunic underneath. They appeared to be celebrating. Krissa’s eyes darted about, searching for anyone in a Legacy uniform. She swallowed hard as she realized why the men were celebrating. They—the inmates—had indeed taken over the Straightjacket.

Someone across the room locked eyes with her and shouted, “Hey! There’s another one!”

She scrambled to back out of the room, but several of the men grabbed her before she made it very far. She screamed as her PDL was batted to the floor. A pair of hands seized her neck and pinned her against the wall. She couldn’t breathe.

“You’re new,” the man said. His blue eyes glinted with unrestrained ire.

Krissa gasped, trying to squirm from his grip. She had no plans to fight or even run. There was nowhere to go. She simply wanted to fill her lungs. She nodded quickly, hoping that her answer would earn her release.

His grasp tightened, accompanying his demand, “Were you hiding?”

She shook her head this time, feeling her eyes bulge as the lack of air started to affect her.

He curled his fist around the collar of her uniform and lifted her off the floor. She panted rapidly as her lungs tried to compensate for lost breath. “Talk,” he ordered.

“I-I’m a systems analyst,” Krissa answered quickly, hoping for mercy, “here to assess the computer needs for the facility.
